These dolls were released at the 1988 Barbie National Convention, which took place in Seattle, Washington with the theme “Come Rain Or Shine.” Mattel did not provide a doll for this convention, but did provide a catalog and a Barbie thermometer (and I imagine the words of the attendees were… “Thanks?”). The hosting Barbie club provided the Sun Gold Malibu doll dressed as the state flower, Rhododendron. There were also several dolls outfitted to be table centerpieces.
